Abnormal Periods

Abnormal periods (absent, skipping, frequent or heavy periods) can be caused by a variety of endocrine or gynecologic problems.  From an endocrine perspective, possible causes include PCOS (see section on PCOS), ovarian insufficiency (either early or normal perimenopause/menopause), pituitary problems including prolactin and thyroid dysfunction and weight disorders.  Both high weight and low weight can cause significant problems with regular periods through pituitary dysfunction and PCOS.
